The hero embarks on an inner journey to find his suppressed childhood self. Memory guides him to observe selected scenes from his boyhood while his subconscious protects him from the stark, black and white reality of abuse, neglect, and poverty by presenting the past in richly colored dream-like sequences. For him it's a journey of forgiveness and self-acceptance that leads back to life.
My directorial and script choices inform how my hero’s selective memory places him in the role of an observer, while his subconscious, in the guise of his boyhood self, shows him difficult moments of his past that he needs to revisit in order to save himself. As a director I deliberately chose that the hero have a detached attitude in response to each dream-like sequence. Cultivating this detachment not only protects him from further pain, it also helps him to endure his recovery process and heal from his wounds. I want to convey that it is the hero who determines each aesthetic backdrop. The various hues and colors of each scene help him frame, and therefore define, the most challenging aspects of what he must recall. The visuals unfold in austere and theater-based cinematography and the actors interpret their roles in a precise, non-naturalistic style which is intended to deflect what would otherwise be an emotionally counter-productive dynamic for the hero.
